Deworming - An Essential To Keep Your Horse Healthy

Given that grass, hay, dirt, manure, bedding contain parasites and these are materials that horses are exposed to, it’s not surprising that these quickly get into a horses body and once they do  they migrate through vital organs, robbing your horse of nutrition and health. Some parasites will cause respiratory problems, others lead to colic a most dangerous illness in a horse.

You have two worming options, either to do this on a continuous basis or to do it periodically.
Continuous Deworming
This method, is one where horses receive a small amount of granular dewormer in their feed every day, in addition to a combination paste dewormer twice a year to protect them against tapeworms and bots. The advantage of daily deworming is that it prevents parasites from taking hold between treatments and has the added benefit of improving a horse’s performance, as well as there condition and/or appearance.

Periodic Paste Deworming
With this alternative to daily worming a paste dewormer is administered every 6 to 8 weeks, rotating between chemical classes. Because different dewormers are effective against different parasites at different stages and work in different ways, rotation protects against a broader range of parasites and helps prevent parasites from developing resistance to the chemicals used.
